No CAD File? How to Get Your Idea 3D Printed.

For a new part, prepare three views

Draw the front, side and top, even roughly. Label overall dimensions and the features that matter: mounting-hole centres, connector access, wall limits and mating surfaces. Add a photo of the assembly and describe the part's load, temperature and handling conditions.

For a replacement part, record the mating geometry

A broken part may have missing or worn features, so copying its visible shape is not always enough. Measure the undamaged interfaces and, if possible, the part it connects to. Identify whether the replacement is a visual cover, a lightly loaded clip or a safety-critical component. The last category needs a qualified design and test review.

Use an existing model carefully

A public STL can be a useful starting point, but check its licence, units, fit and printability. A mesh may need repair or conversion before dimensions can be changed reliably. Avoid assuming that a downloaded model has been verified for your load or material.

Agree on design deliverables

Ask whether the job includes a printable mesh only, an editable CAD source file, drawings, revisions and physical fit checks. Confirm ownership and reuse rights in the written scope instead of relying on a general blog statement.
