Confidential 3D Printing: Questions to Ask Before Sharing CAD.

A confidential prototype may contain commercially sensitive dimensions, mechanisms or customer information. Protect it by agreeing on the handling process before you send the complete CAD package. This is a project checklist, not a statement that any supplier has particular security certifications, technical controls or standard contract terms.

Decide what can be shared at the quotation stage

Start with a redacted drawing, envelope dimensions or a simplified model if those are sufficient for a preliminary discussion. Ask what additional data the supplier needs for a final quote. Keep a record of revisions and recipients so the production file can be identified later.

Agree on NDA and ownership terms

If an NDA is needed, ask for a copy before transfer and have your own adviser review it. The agreement should address permitted use, onward sharing, duration, return or deletion of files and treatment of already-public information. If the supplier also creates CAD, clarify ownership of the original design and the newly created deliverables in the work order.

Ask how files and physical parts are handled

• Who can access the CAD files and where are they stored?
• Will any work be sent to a subcontractor or third-party printing platform?
• How long are files, photographs, failed prints and spare parts retained?
• Can the supplier use the project in marketing or a portfolio?
• What packaging and courier details are appropriate for delivery?

Obtain written answers for the controls that matter to your project. Avoid assuming that a general promise of confidentiality includes encryption, multi-factor access, automatic deletion or a particular disposal method.

Set a practical approval point

Before production, confirm the final model version, quantity, material, delivery contact and who is authorised to approve changes. A single point of contact reduces accidental sharing of outdated drawings. For regulated or sensitive applications, use your organisation's procurement and legal process.
